The commercial irrigation design rebate is available to San Antonio Water System (SAWS) water customers ready to make permanent structural changes to their irrigation systems that result in long-term water savings. Ditch the entire system and receive more of a rebate.

In San Antonio, commercial customers with irrigation systems use 70 percent more water on average in the summer and 50 percent more on an annual basis than those customers without irrigation systems.

Let's Get Started...

Step 1: Schedule a Free Irrigation Consultation

All Irrigation rebates begin and end with an Irrigation Consultation. ***Rebates will not be issued for any irrigation work completed prior to having the initial irrigation consult.

It is recommended you call or email at least 2 weeks in advance of any planned work for an appointment. Appointments are available from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, depending on the size of the property to be evaluated.

Appointments last about two hours; our landscape & irrigation experts will test your irrigation system, review your landscape and conservation goals, make recommendations specific to your business or HOA and leave you with a written irrigation report and rebate offer. They will also answer any questions you have about the irrigation rebate and how much money you may be qualified to receive. During the consultation, our consultants will program your irrigation system to the settings that will best benefit your landscape. Irrigation rebate offers are good for 12 months from the date of the first consultation.

Step 2: Complete the Irrigation Rebate Checklist

The checklist must be completed in order to receive a rebate. If you have had your initial consultation and are ready to make irrigation system changes, complete the GardenStyleSA Irrigation Rebate Checklist to better understand what the consultant will be looking for in the final inspection.

Step 3: Complete the Annual Irrigation Check-up Form (If Required)

If your business or property is required to complete and submit the Annual Irrigation Check-up, your property must be in compliance before a rebate check is issued. Per City of San Antonio Ordinance, if your business property is 5 acres or larger with irrigation and/or uses more than 1 million gallons of irrigation water per year, then an Irrigation Check-up is due May 1 annually.

Step 4: Complete Changes to your Irrigation System

Remember, you MUST have a SAWS Irrigation Consultation before any irrigation work for a rebate can begin. A licensed irrigator complete the work in accordance with all local and state regulations.

Step 5: Schedule and Pass your Final Irrigation Rebate Inspection

When you call or email to make your Final Irrigation Inspection appointment, make it clear that is why you are contacting us. The final irrigation inspection will be very similar to your initial Irrigation Consultation. It will take about two hours, and our SAWS Conservation consultants will test your system to document and verify the changes made to the system that are eligible for a rebate.

You will sign off on the Final Inspection Agreement and Maximum Peak Season Agreement during the appointment. Once the final inspection is complete, SAWS will calculate the final rebate amount and contact you by email within five (5) business days.

***NOTE: Beginning in 2016, SAWS will send you an IRS W-9 Form in your approval email to complete and return if your expected rebate is at least $600. Due to Federal IRS regulations, SAWS is required to send a 1099 Form in the following year for your tax return. Rebate checks will not be released to the recipient until the completed W-9 form is returned to SAWS.

Step 6: Rebate Check Issued

Successful rebate recipients will be issued a check within eight (8) weeks of their email notification of rebate approval. Checks will be made out to the name on the SAWS account. If a different name is to be used, additional paperwork will need to be completed. The check will be mailed first class via the U.S. Postal Service to the mailing address on the Final Inspection Agreement.

NOTE: If you are required to submit a W-9 tax form for a rebate totaling at least $600, your rebate check could be delayed until the completed form is returned to SAWS.

Rebate Requirements

SAWS rebates are based on the amount of water saved after an action or activity is completed. Because landscape water drives peak demand for the entire utility, the amount of the commercial irrigation rebate takes into account the size of the irrigation system and the gallons of water the system uses when it is running. System size (number of zones) and use (average gallons per minute) is measured during the initial consultation for the program. This determines the amount of rebate for which your specific irrigation system is eligible.

Landscape and irrigation changes are expected to be a permanent change to your property. This is why an Irrigation Consultation is required before any work starts and a Final Irrigation Inspection confirming changes is required. The table below shows your options and rebate amount ranges as well as what is required within each option based on your individual irrigation system:

  • Landscape beds only, no sub-surface grass installs accepted
  • Drip may be point-source or in-line
  • Drip emitters must not apply more than 0.6 gallons per hour and a minimum of 18"x18" spacing
  • Drip emitters may not be present in areas without plants
  • Indicator head that is clearly visible with a highly visible color on stem and nozzle
  • Layout must remain uncovered to allow inspection by SAWS staff
Conversion to Pressure-Regulated Heads ($50-$175 per zone)
  • All heads in a zone must be changed to an approved, pressure-reducing spray or rotary option
  • Grass areas only
