Non-Potable Water Tank Registration

A non-potable water tank is installed on a property to capture and store water generated from rainwater, stormwater, cooling towers, air condition condensate or other process for use again on-site, typically as irrigation. However, the water is not for human consumption.

Effective May 1, 2013: Non-potable water tanks that meet one or more of the following criteria must register with San Antonio Water System:

  • All non-potable water tanks located at a commercial or residential property with potable water back-up, regardless of tank capacity.
  • All non-potable water tanks at a commercial location with a combined storage capacity over 5,000 gallons.
  • All non-potable water tanks at a residential location with a combined storage capacity over 1,000 gallons.

Legal Agreement
Please read and agree to the Agreement before submitting your registration.
I acknowledge that an air gap is present separating the potable water back-up and the receiving tank as required between potable back-up and the tank.
I acknowledge that if I am using water for spray irrigation, I have a treatment plan for the stored water (drip application does not need water treatment).
If I am using the non-potable water for indoor use, I have all of the above plus an expansion tank, contaminant disinfection (human consumption only - UV, activated charcoal, or both) and an annual inspection per Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements.
I acknowledge all backflow devices are inspected annually.
I acknowledge all pipe, fittings, heads, valve boxes and backflow boxes are an authorized purple color.
Best Management Practices
I acknowledge that routine use of a biocide is needed if non-potable water is used in conjunction with an irrigation system using spray or rotary heads.
I acknowledge that gutters, screens, and first flush diverters should be inspected monthly and cleaned as needed or a minimum of once every quarter.
I have read accept this Best Management Practices agreement. I understand and will abide by these practices as set forth by the San Antonio Water System and the State of Texas. I understand that in no way does this agreement constitute a permit or authorized use of the tank and that all regulations of the City of San Antonio and the State of Texas must be followed.
I have read and accept this Agreement and I understand and will abide by these guidelines as set forth by San Antonio Water System.
